About the course

An intensive educational program that trains medical staff in the sequential, evidence-based steps for resuscitating newborns who have difficulty transitioning from the womb to breathing on their own at birth, in order to reduce deaths or disabilities caused by oxygen deprivation.

Who is this course for

The course targets all health practitioners who are present at or take part in childbirth and newborn care, including:
• Pediatricians and neonatologists.
• Obstetricians and gynecologists.
• Family medicine and emergency physicians who handle emergency deliveries.
• Midwives and nurses in delivery rooms and neonatal intensive care units (NICU).
• Respiratory therapists involved in neonatal resuscitation.
• Advanced emergency paramedics who deal with home or field emergency births.

What the course covers
• Immediate assessment of the newborn: checking crying, breathing and muscle tone right after birth to determine the need for resuscitation.
• Initial steps of care: training on warming and drying the newborn, opening the airway and stimulating breathing properly.
• Positive-pressure ventilation (PPV): mastering the use of the mask and bag as the most important resuscitation step for newborns who are not breathing.
• Correcting ventilation errors (MR. SOPA): applying the six organised corrective steps to make sure oxygen reaches the lungs effectively.
• Advanced airway devices: training on placing the endotracheal tube (intubation) or laryngeal mask (LMA) when needed.
• Chest compressions for newborns: how to perform chest compressions in precise coordination with ventilation at a ratio of 3 compressions to 1 breath.
• Umbilical venous catheterization (UVC): hands-on training in securing rapid venous access through the umbilical cord to give emergency drugs.
• Resuscitation drugs and fluids: studying doses and calculations for epinephrine and volume expanders (normal saline) for small weights.
• Post-resuscitation care: the medical steps needed to stabilise the newborn and transfer them safely to intensive care (NICU).
• High-performance team dynamics: organising effective communication and quickly dividing tasks between the physician, nurse and midwife in the delivery room.
